IBA members and companions,
welcome to Alaska

The information on viewing sites is organized in 2 ways:
o
Bear viewing sites:  Pick a site, then track down the gateway communities through which you
can reach the site.  If there are overnight accommodations near a viewing site, we provide
descriptions and contact information.

o
Gateway communities:  Pick a community, then track down the bear viewing sites and other
attractions  which can be conveniently reached from that community -- which you might reach by
driving or flying.  For some gateway communities, we provide a little information about overnight
accommodations, sources of goods and services you might need, and local attractions.

Except for Denali, all of the best sites for bear viewing which are convenient to Anchorage, are
located on the Kenai Peninsula, on Kodiak Island, or to the west of those areas -- i.e., on the west
side of Cook Inlet or Shelikof Strait.  Click here to see a map identifying those viewing sites and their
gateway communities.

Bear viewing sites & gateway communities in South-Central Alaska
Brown bear searching for salmon in Diving Bear Cove,

This is the first of a series of pages to provide you with information about opportunities for viewing bears or
other wildlife, and secondarily for other attractions such as Alaska's cultural heritage and scenery, or angling
for salmon or halibut.

During early June, there are only a handful of good bear viewing sites that can be conveniently reached from
Anchorage for a 1 or 2 day excursion.  So it is only those sites for which information is provided in this cluster of
webpages.  These sites are located in 5 areas:

o  North of Anchorage, in Interior Alaska, especially Denali National Park.
o  South of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula or on the western side of Cook Inlet
o  Even farther south on the coast of Katmai National Park or on Kodiak Island
